Transactional sex among causes of new HIV cases

MANILA, Philippines – “Transactional sex” is one of the causes of the 667 new HIV/AIDS cases documented by the Department of Health (DOH) in March.

The DOH said 11 percent or 76 cases of HIV/AIDS cases have engaged in transactional sex.

Based on the DOH’s Philippine HIV/AIDS and Anti-Retroviral Treatment Registry, all but two of the 76 cases were males, whose ages ranged from 18 to 61 years old.

“Fifty-one percent of males who engaged in transactional sex were the ones who paid for sex. On the other hand, two HIV-positive females with ages 25 and 29 years were reported to have accepted payment for sex,” the DOH said.

People who engaged in transactional sex are those who report that they regularly accept payment for sex, pay for sex or do both.

The registry also showed that of the 76 cases, 20 have accepted payment for sex while 38 have paid for sex. Eighteen cases have engaged in both.

From October 2012 to March 2015, a total of 1,871 cases were people who engaged in transactional sex. Nine-percent of them were males. –Sheila Crisostomo (The Philippine Star)
