Another body retrieved from Semirara coal mine accident; death toll rises to 6

Authorities extricated on Saturday another body under the rubble of the collapsed mine wall at Semirara coal mine in Caluya, Antique, bringing the total number of fatalities to six, while three others have remained missing, a report from GMA’s “24 Oras” said.

The report quoted Antique Governor Rhodora Cadiao as saying that water has continued seeping through a part of the mine pit wall, which might have caused Friday’s accident.

Cadiao also said that instead of adding wall support, the mining operator had only asked the miners to dig canals to let the seeping seawater pass through the pit.

Seeping seawater was also believed to be the cause of a similar accident in a different part of the same mining pit on Semirara Island in 2013. Five people were reported killed at the time.

DMCI, the owner of the coal mine, has yet to gave a statement regarding the latest incident.

Earlier, the local government of Caluya identified the fifth victim as Bernie Manrique, 39. There was no information yet on the identity of the 6th victim.

The other fatalities – all miners – were earlier identified as Danilo Dayupan, Alexander Nudo, Ricardo Panes, and Arnold Omac.

The Department of Energy ordered the suspension of the coal mining operations after the incident on July 17.

The DOE as well as the Department of Labor and Employment are conducting separate investigations on the incident. — Andrei Medina/LBG, GMA News
