ITOGON, Benguet – Another small-scale miner died of gas poisoning inside a private mine tunnel in Sitio Macaag, Itogon, Benguet, barely a week after four miners also died of the same cause in this town.

The body of Rolly Alonzo Mathis, 27, of Midas, Ucab, Itogon, was recovered at around 6 p.m. on Thursday, one hour before it was reported to the Itogon Municipal Police Station.

Investigation disclosed that the victim together with his younger brother Ronnie Mathis entered the mine tunnel at around 3 p.m. on Thursday and proceeded to their respective work areas.

After two hours of working, Ronnie went to his brother’s work place where he found the victim lying unconscious.
Ronnie immediately sought help from fellow miners to bring out the victim and rush him to Baguio General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. (Larry P. Fabian)
