MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has stopped the construction of a power plant in Iloilo City due to an accident that resulted in the death of a worker.

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the DOLE-Western Visayas regional office stopped the construction of the Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) in La Paz following the death of a crane operator, who was hit by a hook and load on July 27.

Labor inspectors also discovered that the sub-contractor, Genthink International Construction Corp., failed to show a construction safety and health program while the PEDC failed to show work permits for its Taiwanese workers.

DOLE said construction activities could not resume until the company complies with all labor rules.

Meanwhile, DOLE-Western Visayas also ordered the owner and management of Monocrete Construction Phils. to stop any construction activity within the 50-meter radius of the crane. –Mayen Jaymalin (The Philippine Star)
