For the month of September alone, close to 700 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were recorded, increasing the number of cases for the year to almost 6,000, according to the Department of Health (DOH).
According to the data from the HIV/AIDS Registry of the Philippines, a total of 692 new cases of HIV was recorded last September, bringing the number of cases for the first eight months of the year to 5,901.
“This [692 cases] was 22 percent higher compared to the same period last year, which is 565,” the DOH-Epidemiology Bureau report noted, adding that of the 692 new cases, 45 have progressed already to full-blown Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.
More than one-third or 270 new HIV cases in September came from the National Capital Region (NCR); followed by 128 in Calabarzon; 60 in Central Visayas; 60 in Central Luzon; and 38 in Davao Region.
Out of the 692 new cases in September, a total of 667 or 96.38 percent of the cases were acquired through sexual transmission, mostly from the men-having-sex-with-men (MSM) population that accounted for 577 cases or 87 percent. In addition, homosexual contact was responsible for 338 cases, followed by bisexual contact with 239 cases, and 90 cases from heterosexual contact.
