BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – A firefighter was electrocuted as he and his colleagues were putting out a fire that destroyed 13 houses in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental on Monday.

Fire Officer 3 Ricardo Catalan might have touched a live wire while performing his duty, according to Superintendent Fred Trajeras, officer-in-charge of the Negros Island Region fire bureau.

Catalan died while being treated at the San Carlos District Hospital.

Investigation showed Catalan and Senior Fire Officer 1 Marilou de la Cruz were inspecting commercial establishments when they received a call about an ongoing fire in the area.

They immediately boarded a fire truck along with their colleagues to respond to the incident.

Authorities placed the damage at more than P100,000.
