MANILA – The business process outsourcing sector should prepare for the “inevitable” use of artificial intelligence to prevent job losses, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia said Monday.

The use of AI on BPOs will happen in 3 to 5 years, said Pernia, who earlier flagged a growth slowdown in the industry’s office space take-up in the last 3 months of 2017.

“I think there’s increasing awareness and consciousness about the possibility that certain regular jobs we are used to will be taken over by technology,” Pernia told reporters.

“There’s just a need for firms, BPOs included, to adjust to get in, to prepare for the inevitable,” he said.
