MANILA — Some 14,000 workers of provincial bus firms have lost their jobs due to coronavirus quarantines, a transport leader said Monday.

Provincial buses are banned from entering Metro Manila and are required to carry only half of their passenger capacity and implement cashless fare collection, said Provincial Bus Operators Association of the Philippines President Alex Yague.

(Some 14,000 workers have lost their jobs. They were either asked to retire or were retrenched. Some were told to go on forced leave.)

The figure includes drivers, ticket collectors and support staff like mechanics, dispatchers and inspectors, he said.
