MANILA, Philippines — Older people remained to be the most vulnerable to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection as more than half of the country’s total fatalities due to the respiratory illness were recorded among people aged 60 and above.

Data from the Department of Health (DOH) showed that 61.45% of the total 3,039 COVID-19 deaths as of Aug. 25 are among the elderlies.

People aged 60-69 account for 851 (28.01%) of the total deaths nationwide, 686 (22.58%) are 70-79 years old while 330 (10.86%) are aged 80 and above.

“Demographics are still the same… mas malaking porsyento pa rin ng mga namamatay ay among elderlies and those of course with co-morbidities,” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in an online media forum Wednesday.

Meanwhile, 571 of the COVID-19 fatalities are aged 50-59; 294 are 40-49 years old; 147 are 30-39, 89 are 20-29, 30 are 10-19 while 39 are aged 10 and below.

Earlier, the DOH reported that most of the coronavirus cases in the Philippines are among those aged 20 to 59 years old or those under the working population.

As of Tuesday, there are 197,164 confirmed coronavirus infections nationwide, of which, 132,396 are recoveries.
