MANILA, Philippines — Up to 346 Filipinos who were rescued from scam hubs in Myanmar returned to the Philippines yesterday.
The victims arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on a chartered flight from Bangkok, Thailand.
They were welcomed by Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission executive director Benjamin Acorda Jr. and other government officials.
BI: POGOs linked to scam hubs
After President Marcos banned Philippine offshore gaming operations last year, some POGO firms are now collaborating with scam hubs abroad, according to the Bureau of Immigration.
“Some POGO companies are recruiting Pinoys to work in scam hubs abroad,” Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said yesterday.
After intercepting on Nov. 8 seven trafficking victims headed for Cambodia, Viado said their suspicion of POGOs’ involvement grew stronger. – Evelyn Macairan
