Asbestos removal violations in North Carolina

Published by rudy Date posted on June 10, 2009

The town of  Marshall, North Carolina, according to story in the News-Record & Sentinel, has been cited by the state department of labor for several serious violations regarding the removal of asbestos-containing tiles from its city hall.

According to documents from the North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDL), the work was not supervised by qualified personell, and, most disconcertingly, that workers may not have been using proper protective equipment while performing the cleanup.

The asbestos, accoriding to the NCDL, contained 10 percent chrysotile asbestos, which is considered to be less dangerous than asbestos in the amphibole family. However, most chrysotile asbestos is contaminated with at least some amphibole asbestos, which has been shown to cause mesothelioma, a rare and deadly form of cancer, even in after short,  low dose exposures. –http://www.asbestoswatch.net
