EnviroTech Remediation Services was fined $13,200 by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) for improper removal of asbestos. The MPCA claimed that EnviroTech failed to inform them of a siding removal project and did not keep the material wet to prevent dust from forming when materials were broken.
In lieu of paying the fine to Minnesota’s general fund, EnviroTech chose to perform $12,000 worth of asbestos removal for the Inver Grove Heights School District, free of charge. While the company representative stated that the business did nothing illegal and that they followed industry standards, it would have cost them more to fight the charges than it would to complete this project. In the end, the remediation benefited the MPCA, EnviroTech and the Inver Grove Heights School District.
The MPCA is happy to allow companies to perform projects like this as payment for civil penalties, as it keeps the penalties invested in environmental projects. EnviroTech safely removed 11,000 square feet of ceiling tile and 300 pipe fittings from the school buildings. –http://www.mesotheliomanews.com
