170 undocumented workers repatriated

At least 170 undocumented Filipino workers stranded under the Khandara Bridge in Jeddah are already set for repatriation, an official said Friday.

Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Esteban Conejos, citing reports from Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah Ezzedin Tago, confirmed that the stranded Filipinos are now in a Saudi deportation center for the processing of their exit papers.

The exit clearance of the migrant workers in Jeddah is given by their employers.

“The embassy officials are already coordinating with Saudi authorities for their earliest return to the Philippines,” Conejos said.

Conejos added that the Philippine Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, has also dispatched three Consular officials to provide assistance to 60 Filipinos in Maldives who have been reportedly suffering inhuman treatment from their employers. — Llanesca T. Panti, Manila Times
