The construction industry provides the widest asbestos threat. Asbestos products are used in houses, buildings and structures as roofing felts or related products, cement roofing and flat sheets and plywood substitutes. Asbestos poses danger as long as these materials are in place.
But how prevalent is the use of asbestos in houses?
Per NSO survey in 2000, there were 8,823 housing units whose outer walls were made of asbestos materials and 1,121 of this number had roof materials made of asbestos. Out of the 14,891,127 total number of housing units occupied, 57,300 had roofs made of asbestos/others.
That means there were 66,123 (8,823+57,300) housing units with asbestos as outer walls and roofs. If we multiply that by 5 which is the average household size in the Philippines, we have 330,615 people possibly exposed to asbestos in 2000.
And that number only refers to the occupants of the housing units. How about visitors and people who passed by these houses? And how about exposure in buildings and structures with asbestos? Let your imagination fly…
