DOLE boosts inspection of hazard-prone firms

MANILA, Philippines – Workers nationwide can look forward to safer and better workplaces during the holiday season.

This, as the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has started the “stringent inspection” of pyrotechnic factories and other “hazardous” establishments nationwide to ensure the safety of their workers.

Labor Secretary Marianito Roque said the DOLE is also closely checking on hospitals, construction companies and those employing women and children.

Roque said all their regional offices will conduct these inspections until Nov. 30.

“Our inspectors will ensure that all establishments are complying not only with labor standards, but also with health and safety rules to deter the incidence of accidents, especially (those) producing pyrotechnic products which usually do brisk business during the holidays,” he said.

Roque said all DOLE inspections will be suspended from Dec. 1 to Jan. 15, 2010 to avoid the notion that the inspectors may just be soliciting gifts from employers. – Mayen Jaymalin, Philippine Star
