PASAY, Philippines– 14 students from ten Philippine schools received the highest honors in the 2009 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) and were awarded at the Sofitel Hotel. The AMC is a correspondence type exam aimed at highlighting the importance of the subject matter and discovering individuals who display excellent knowledge in mathematics.
Seanne Ng of Saint jude Catholic School, Justrin Edric Yturzaeta of Jubilee Christian Academy, Julius Vincent Sy of Stephen’s High School and Amiel Sy of PSHS-Main Campus received the outstanding performance award.
Adrian Sy, sisters Audrey Celine and Czarina Lao of Saint Jude Catholic School, Lormes Pedeglorio of Butuan City Special Education Center, Miguel Lorenzo Ildesa of Parents for Education (PAREF) Westbridge School, Aldric Cristoval Reyes of Chiang Kai Shek College, John Russel Virata of Gideon Academy, Alvin Uy Lim of Quezon City Science High School, Emiliano Tan of Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Main School AND Jake Gacuan of University of the Philippines were awarded the AMC Prize Award, the highest award given to individuals at the top one percent of their competitors.
Apart from the 14 students who got the prestigious awards, 43 other students also bagged High Distinction honors for being at the top two percent of examinees in their year level.
The AMC is administered by the Australian Mathematics Trust and conducted in cooperation with the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild.
Dr. Ester B. Ogena, Director of the Science Education Institute (SEI) said that she hoped the students would pursue undergraduate courses in science and engineering to help combat the effects of natural disasters.
“The recent typhoons that has been hitting our country and the devastation it has left us shows that we need more scientists and engineers to counter the onslaught it causes,” Ogena said.
Ogena also notes that the SEI also offers science scholarships at both undergraduate and graduate levels. –The Manila Times
