Wage boards expected to decide on pay hike this week

THE National Wages and Productivity Commission’s may decide on the petitions to raise the minimum daily pay as early as this week.

But the commission has hinted that the increase may be lower than what the labor groups have been petitioning.

Workers led by the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines are seeking a P75 across-the-board increase for workers in Metro Manila, while those in other regions have filed separate petitions. Kilusang Mayo Uno is seeking a P125 daily hike.

The minimum daily wage in Metro Manila is P382. In the regions, the minimum daily wage is P180 to P320.

In its petition filed in March, the TUCP said that of the P75 it had been asking, P19 reflected the actual increase in prices from June 2008 to January 2010; P35 the projected rise in Consumer Price Index from January to December 2010; and P21 indicated the 21 years that there had been no increases in the real wage since 1989.

The last minimum wage increase for Metro Manila workers was P20 a day in June 2008. Bloomberg
