MANILA, Philippines – Organized labor today urged President apparent Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to resurrect the Freedom of Information (FOI) bill as proof of his anti-corruption campaign.
Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP), the country’s largest labor group, said the new Congress and Aquino should approve the measure within the first 100 days of their office.
“The bill’s approval inside the first 100 days of the new administration will surely give meaning to Mr. Aquino’s forceful anti-corruption stance,” TUCP secretary general and former Sen. Ernesto Herrera said.
Herrera noted that corruption is anti-workers since it breeds unfair competition, blows out investments and destroys jobs.
According to Herrera, workers are counting on the passage of the FOI bill to promote absolute transparency, reinforce public accountability and repel malfeasance in government.”
“Highly improved governance is vital to drawing in more investments and creating badly needed new jobs,” Herrera stressed. –Mayen Jaymalin (philstar.com)
