CAR sales rose 37.1 percent to 82,147 units in the six months to June as a result of higher consumer confidence and attractive financing packages, a group said Friday.
The comparative figure a year ago was 59,909 units. Sales in June alone increased 8.5 percent to 15,189 units from 13,995 in May.
“The supply of stocks has started to normalize, serving the growing demand that continues to be robust,” said Elizabeth Lee, president of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc.
“Based on the performance of the past two quarters, the pace has been set for yet higher sales volumes for the coming months.”
Sales of passenger cars grew 32.2 percent to 28,222 units from 21,342 a year ago, and in June alone sales rose 7.7 percent to 5,472 units from 5,083 the month previous.
Sales of vans, pick-ups and sports utility vehicles also increased, and by 39.8 percent to 53,925 units from 38,567. June sales went up 9 percent to 9,717 units from 8,912 in May
Dealers moved 27.8 percent more Asian utility vehicles, to 17,750 units from 13,884, and in June alone sales rose 12.5 percent to 3,312 units from 2,945 in May.
Sales of light commercial vehicles increased 50.1-percent to 35,033 units from 23,336, and June sales alone went up 7.7 percent to 6,188 units from 5,744 the previous month.
But sales of light trucks slid 10 percent to 813 units from 903. June sales dipped a slight 1.8 percent to 167 units from 170 in May.
Trucks and buses registered the biggest drop in sales, and by 25.9 percent to 329 units from 444 a year ago. June sales also went down, and by 5.7 percent to 50 units from 53 in May.
Toyota Motors Philippines Corp. again topped the market after it sold 26,493 units in the six months to June, a 27.6-percent increase from the 20,768 it sold a year ago. June sales also increased, and by 5.6 percent to 5,096 units from 4,826 in May.
Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. placed second after it sold 46.9 percent more vehicles, to 15,653 from 10,654, although its June sales grew only a slight 2.2 percent, and to 2,762 units from 2,703 the previous month.
Third-placer Hyundai Asia Resources Inc. saw its sales rise 100.6 percent to 9,834 units from 4,902 a year ago. Its June sales also increased, and by 30.9 percent to 2,031 units from 1,562 in May. –Julito Rada, Manila Standard Today
