48 policemen fired for rights violations

MANILA, Philippines – A total of 48 policemen across the country were kicked out of the Philippine National Police (PNP) for human rights violation for the last three years.

A record from the PNP-Directorate for Records and Personnel Management (DPRM) covering 2008 to July 2010 revealed that 71 others were suspended while 15 more cops were demoted due to cases involving various types of human rights violations.

The number of dismissed policemen in connection with human rights violations represents roughly 12 percent of the total number of cops dismissed from the service for various cases since 2008.

Director General Raul Bacalzo, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said that the move is part of the reform programs being implemented in the police in order to make the organization human rights sensitive.

“As part of the accountability mechanisms in the PNP, erring personnel are subjected to investigation and sanctions, with due process,” said Bacalzo. –AARON B. RECUENCO, Manila Bulletin
