FOREIGN Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo met with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on Tuesday to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, boost investment and trade and enhance development cooperation to aid the Philippines in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
In a statement, the Foreign Affairs department reported that besides meeting with Lee, Romulo also held a “productive bilateral meeting” with South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan.
The report said that Romulo and the South Korean officials discussed plans to convene regular bilateral policy consultations between the Foreign Affairs department and the South Korean foreign ministry.
During the meetings, the officials reaffirmed the “vibrant and mutually beneficial friendship” between the two countries for the past 62 years. The meetings allowed both governments to chart the direction of their cooperation not only for 2011, but also for the coming years.
The officials touched on “the enhancement of bilateral trade and greater access for PHL goods into the ROK market, boosting South Korean foreign direct investments into the Philippines amidst soaring investor confidence and the Aquino administration’s pledge of good governance and harnessing development cooperation to assist the Philippines in realizing its development priorities and its attainment of the [eight] MDGs.”
“Both sides also touched on specific cooperation relating to the development of energy resources, including renewable energy, as well as [South Korean] participation in the Aquino administration’s public-private partnership projects,” the Foreign Affairs department said.
Besides discussing the developments of relations between Seoul and Manila, government officials also noted the growing people-to-people interaction and cultural exchanges of the two countries.
Lee will be visiting the Philippines within this year upon the invitation of President Benigno Aquino 3rd. Also, the South Korean president conveyed his invitation to President Aquino to an official visit to his country. –Bernice Camille V. Bauzon, Manila Times
