Kindergarten bill passed in House on 3rd reading

MANILA, Philippines – Children will soon be required to take one year in kindergarten education as pre-requisite to enter Grade I under a bill that was passed on third and final reading at the House of Representatives.

House Bill No. 3826 institutionalizes kindergarten education into the basic education system and will be mandatory starting school year 2011-2012.

Public schools are mandated to offer it to children five year-old and above for free.

“Kindergarten education is vital to the academic and technical development of the Filipino child for it is the period where the young mind’s absorptive capacity for learning is at its sharpest,” the bill said.

The Department of Education through the Bureau of Elementary Education has been tasked to manage the program’s organization, operation and implementation.

The initial funding will be sourced from the funds of the DepEd.

The bill was introduced by 27 House members and approved in the committee on basic education and culture headed by Sorsogon Representative Salvador Escudero III. –Naereeza Bainto and Shyla Francisco, INQUIRER.NET trainees, INQUIRER.net
