TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines—The Department of Health’s regional office in Eastern Visayas, DoH-8, has recorded four new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in the region.

Boyd Cerro, DoH-8 sentinel nurse, said the patients were all male and would be given counseling and medical assistance.

He said two of the patients got the virus through multiple sex partners while the two others were infected through blood donation.

One of the four patients chose to be confined in a Cebu hospital, he added.

HIV is the virus that causes the dreaded Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

The total number of HIV and AIDS cases in Eastern Visayas has reached 40, including the new cases, since 1984. Four AIDS patients have since died, said Cerro. –Joey A. Gabieta, Inquirer Visayas
