Pinoy seafarer in Sri Lanka gets insurance, back wages after accident

With help from Philippine officials there, a Filipino seafarer managed to claim his insurance and back wages from a Sri Lankan shipping firm.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said the Philippine Honorary Consulate General in Colombo and Status Maritime Corp. extended help to Henry Canazares Laguardia.

“(Laguardia) met an accident while on board the vessel and sustained burns. He was confined at Nawaloka Hospital in Sri Lanka where he received treatment,” the DFA said in a news release posted Tuesday on its website.

He had served aboard the M/V Brillante Virtuoso, which is owned by Ceyline Shipping Limited based in Sri Lanka.

The Consulate sought the assistance of a law firm in Sri Lanka to represent Laguardia in claiming his legitimate demands.

Honorary Consul General William John Terrence Perera also provided Laguardia with basic necessities, while the Filipino community in Sri Lanka visited him while in the hospital.

Laguardia arrived in Manila last February 11 via Qatar Airlines, the DFA said. — RSJ, GMA News
