LEGAZPI CITY: Students throughout Albay will be learning about the life-wrenching, impact of climate change beginning this school year.

Albay’s army of public school teachers in elementary and secondary levels in will be adding climate change adaptation into the school curriculum. Climate change strategies will now become part of major subjects to instill awareness among learners about disaster risk reduction and strategies to adapt to global climate change.

Manuel “Nong” Rangasa, executive director of Center for Initiatives and Research on Climate Adaptation (CIRCA) told The Manila Times that 8,000 public school teachers across the province were trained on disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation strategies.

Climate change adaptation strategies will be integrated into school subjects such as English, Science, Social Studies, Arts and even Mathematics.

“We have finally added climate change into major subjects starting at Grade IV in elementary up to the high school years. We want to make sure that school children grasp Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation strategies from their lessons so that they become fully aware of our zero casualty goals every time there is a disaster,” Albay Governor Joey Salceda told The Manila Times. –Rhaydz B.
