SINGAPORE : The International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) have signed a two-year agreement to improve labour and workplace practices in the ASEAN region.

To be implemented between 2011 and 2013, the collaboration will cover areas like occupational safety and health, tripartism and social dialogue.

Other areas of work may also be added by mutual agreement.

Singapore will co-organise and co-fund activities like study trips and workshops in Singapore, while the ILO will contribute its specialists’ expertise.

ILO Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Sachiko Yamamoto, said the long-standing cooperation between Singapore and the ILO plays a valuable role in progress towards decent work for all in the region.

She added: “This partnership is also an example of the growing importance of the region’s deepening integration.”

Ms Yamamoto signed the agreement with the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Loh Khum Yean on June 15 at a ceremony during the 100th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. – CNA/ms
