World Day vs Child Labor

MANILA Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is supporting the 2011 World Day Against Child Labor, which will be observed this coming June 12 by the member-states of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in hopes of drawing “attention to the global extent of child labor and the action needed to eliminate it.”

The Philippines, which has been a member since 2002, has been encouraged

World Day vs Child Laborby DILG Undersecretary Rico Puno in DILG memorandum circular 2011-76 to promote awareness-raising activities for both adults and children.

He has called on all provincial governors, city and municipal mayors, punong barangays, SK chairpersons, and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) local executives to “support the campaign” and “recognize the dangers of hazardous work on children.”

This year’s global theme is called “Warning! Children in Hazardous Work – End Child Labor.” This theme will be translated as “Mapanganib na Paggawa, Bawal sa Bata!” in the Philippines. (Czarina Nicole O. Ong, Manila Bulletin)
