A FORMER president of the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) branded as toothless paper tiger the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) directive for a moratorium on enrollment in nursing.
“So who’s following that order? That’s only good on paper,” Leah Samaco-Paquiz, former PNA president told media at the weekly Fernandina forum in Greenhills, San Juan City.
Paquiz stressed that the PNA rejects the CHED order and insists that the moratorium is not the answer to address the supposed oversupply of nurses in the country.
She added that the moratorium was even against human rights since this served as a stumbling block for one to realize his dream and prevent him from becoming a productive citizen.
At the same time, Paquiz urged the government to stop the illegal practice of hospital charging fees for training nurses.
Asked to identify the hospitals who are into this illegal practice, Paquiz said “halos lahat ng ospital sa atin ay ganito ang gawain.”
She debunked claims that there is an over supply of nurses pointing that the current ratio of nurse to patient in hospital is one 1:1,000. –SAMMY MARTIN, Manila TImes
