Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz yesterday said the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) partially lifted the deployment ban in Afghanistan and Iraq as situation in that countries return to normal.
She said that overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who have previous employment contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan may return but prohibits new applicants.
The DoLE said that there are over 7,000 Filipino workers inside the US facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan and may continue with their contracts, which could be renewed on site.
The Philippine Overseas Employment and Administration Governing Board Resolution approved Resolution 5 dated Sept. 2, allowing Filipinos working inside US military camps and installations in Iraq and Afghanistan to continue their contracts, which means that Filipinos with “valid existing contracts” in the US facilities may come home to the Philippines for vacation and they will be allowed by the POEA to return to their work under such contracts.
The resolution was based on the assessment made by the Department of Foreign Affairs of the condition in that countries, according to Labor spokesman Nikon Fameronag. –Mina Diaz, DAily Tribune
