TOKYO (via PLDT)—Japan has agreed to review its procedures for the entry of Filipino nurses under the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement following the very low rate of successful applications three years since the agreement was signed, President Benigno Aquino III said Wednesday.
He said he brought up the issue with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda during their meeting Tuesday evening, and that Noda’s response was “quite positive.”
“We asked them to review the procedures for the entry of nurses because it has been three years and only this many nurses have passed so far,” Mr. Aquino told reporters.
“They did promise to review the procedure and see if it is too stringent. Initially, there are language difficulties, so there are certain proposals to use commonly accepted symbols or signs instead.”
Filipino nurses must first undergo six months of language and culture training, during which they will receive an allowance of 40,000 yen, which is equivalent to P21,000, a month.
They will be allowed to stay in Japan for three years, during which they may take the licensing examination to become full-fledged nurses.
An applicant must be a nursing graduate who has passed the board exams in the Philippines and worked at least three years in a hospital. –Joyce Pangco Pañares, Manila Standard Today
