In a move to steer students away from substandard schools and so-called “diploma mills,” the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), in partnership with the Professional Regulation Commission, will publish the performance of colleges and universities in PRC licensure examinations.
Dr. Emmanuel Angeles III, CHED chairman, said the initiative will hopefully compel substandard schools to upgrade the quality of education they offer or just go out of business.
“The substandard schools will have to upgrade. If they will not upgrade, no students will enroll with them,” Angeles told reporters in a recent briefing.
With the graduation season this March, Angeles said the CHED and PRC will start publication of notices in national and community newspapers.
Angeles said they will list the performance of graduates of all colleges and universities in PRC licensure examinations administered in 2008.
He said that leaflets of the performance list will also be distributed among graduating high school students this March and April.
In these notices and leaflets, students, especially their parents, will be informed of the percentage of students of a particular school that passed or flunked in PRC licensure exams.
CHED has faced difficulties in enforcing its mandate to close down schools with dismal performance in PRC licensure examinations due to the legal cases filed by these schools.–Rainier Allan Ronda, Philippine Star
