Reds raid plywood plant, set fire to equipment

ZAMBOANGA CITY: New People’s Army rebels raided a plywood factory and torched its equipment before escaping in the province of Agusan del Sur in the southern Philippines, military officials said.

Officials said communist gunmen attacked the factory of the Casilayan Softwood Development Corporation in San Salvador village in Prosperidad town on Tuesday.

The rebels, numbering about 20, fled after the attack, said Army Major Eugenio Osias, a spokesman for the 4th Infantry Division.

He said the attack was connected to extortion demands by the NPA, which is fighting for decades now for the establishment of a Maoist state in the country. “Extortion was likely motive of the attack,” Osias said, citing military intelligence reports.

Company executives were not immediately available to make a statement, but the military and police have previously blamed the rebels for similar attacks on mining firms and fruit plantations in Mindanao that refused to pay so-called revolutionary taxes. –AL JACINTO, Manila Times
