Bank unions support Herrera-led TUCP

The president of the federation of labor groups in the financial services sector announced yesterday it has rejoined the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP).

Jose Umali Jr., President of the National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) said they returned to the TUCP on invitation of former senator Ernesto Herrera, who claimed to be the new TUCP president.

Herrera claimed he became TUCP president by succession following the resignation of 89-year-old Democrito Mendoza, who held the post for many years. Herrera was former Secretary-General.

But other TUCP officials said Mendoza has withdrawn his resignation. Mendoza’s supporters prevented Herrera from taking over TUCPP’s headquarters in Quezon City last week.

Umali said NUBE detahced itself from TUCP under Mendoza years ago because of “undemocratic and family-motivated interest.”

He said that they have waited for a long time to see the end of the Mendoza family-controlled TUCP.

“Thus, it is with great joy that we welcome your ascendancy as TUCP president, and expect that this will usher in a new dawn for the labor movement. NUBE supports you in your bold and courageous decision to take the reins of TUCP,” Umali said.

Herrera served as senator from 1987 to 1992. He also served as a member of Congress representing the first district of Bohol in 1998. –Vito Barcelo, Manila Standard Today
