The Hong Kong Immigration Department said foreign domestic helpers who are not provided proper accommodation by their employers may file a complaint with the Hong Kong government.
According to a report on the news site Hong Kong News, the Immigration Department issued the statement after migrant workers denounced the “inhumane” living conditions of an Indonesian helper who was made to sleep in a makeshift bed inside the toilet of a popular singer Purple Lee.
The migrant workers also called for the abolition of the policy mandating live-in arrangements for domestic workers in Hong Kong.
Citing an email of the Immigration Department to Hong Kong News, the report said employers are required by law to provide “suitable accommodation and with reasonable privacy.”
If employers fail to provide these, the domestic workers may file complaints with appropriate agencies.
If found guilty, the employers will be liable to prosecution and to a maximum fine of $150,000 and imprisonment for 14 years.
However, Hong Kong News noted that the Immigration Department did not define “suitable accommodation. – VVP, GMA News
