Neda exec explains link between PH high jobless rate and hot weather

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine economy is fast improving. But why is unemployment worsening?

According to National Economic and Development Authority assistant director-general Rosemarie Edillon, the hot weather that consequently resulted in the drop in farm sector jobs had something to do with the 7.5-percent unemployment rate last April.

“Noong time kasi ng April, when the survey (on labor force) was done, eto ‘yong time na masyadong matindi ang heat sa atin. So a lot of farmers in-advance nila ang kanilang planting calender. They planted already in March tapos ‘yong iba naman dinelay ang planting,” Edillon says.

[In April, when the survey on labor force was done, it was also the time when we were experiencoing intensive heat. So a lot of farmers decided to advance their planting calendar. They planted already in March while others decided to delay their planting schedule.]
