Asbestos use alarms bishop

ANGELES CITY—Bishop Pablo Virfiolio David is looking into the sale of asbestos as soundproofing material in hardware stores here despite a worldwide ban.

He and officers of the Parish Pastoral Council sought a dialogue with health and environment authorities, local government, and advocate Subli over the availability of the toxic material.

David said he discovered that asbestos was used in the parish office after he ordered its renovation last May.

During the dialogue, Natalia Sapla, of the Environmental Management Bureau, said black and blue asbestos are banned worldwide.

White asbestos has been phased out in the United States and other countries but still used in China and the Philippines as fire proofing material, sound insulator and in motor vehicle brake lining among other applications. –Fred Villareal, Manila Standard Today
