MANILA – A group of students from the Philippines emerged as overall champions in the recently concluded Asia Inter-Cities Teenagers Mathematics Olympiad (AITMO) in Indonesia.
The Philippine delegation in this year’s AITMO won four champion awards, two first runner-up and three second runner-up awards in the team and group contests, according to Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG).
They also bagged three gold medals, four silver and one bronze, and eight merit awards in the individual contests.
Philippine Team D bagged the overall champion trophy, edging out Taiwan Team B and Thailand Team A which won first and second runner-up, respectively.
Philippine Team D is composed of Adrian Reginald Sy and Matthew Angelo Isidro of St. Jude Catholic School, Clyde Wesley Ang of Chiang Kai Shek College and Nathanael Joshua Balete of St. Stephen’s High School.
In the individual competition, Sy, Ang and Kelsey Lim Tiong Soon of Grace Christian College won gold medals. Silver medalists include Balete, Isabella Mae Tan of St. Jude Catholic School, Jose Alfonso Ignacio Mirabueno of Philippine Science High School-Davao Campus and Ethan Riley Chan of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.
Gene Go Jr. Zamboanga Chong Hua High School bagged a bronze medal, while merit awardees include Isidro, Christopher Banzon of Makati Science High School, Jason Carlo Carranceja of Grace Christian College, Terence Brian Tsai of Chiang Kai Shek College, Janine Michelle Yu of Philippine Institute of Quezon City, Shawn Gabriel Cabanes of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, Elijamin Wolfgang Claveria of Philippine Science High School-Main and Xavier Jefferson Ray Go of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.
“Filipino students have proven again their outstanding math skills in an international competition. We are so proud of what they have achieved in the AITMO. This is truly inspiring,” MTG president and head of the Philippine delegation Dr. Simon Chua said in a statement released Monday.
Philippine Team A won as champion in the team contest and first-runner up in the group contest, while Philippine Team B was named first runner-up in the team contest and second runner-up in the group contest.
On the other hand, Philippine Team C bagged second runner-up in the team and group contests. In the Puzzle Challenge, Isidro and Gene Go Jr. won first and second runner-up, respectively.
Aside from the Philippines, other participating countries in this year’s AITMO include Bulgaria, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand.
