Philippine economic managers dominated the Top 10 government officials who receive the largest salaries and allowances in government in 2013.
In the 2013 Report on Salaries and Allowances (ROSA) released by the Commission on Audit, the list was topped by Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) president and general manager Robert Vergara whose total compensation was pegged at P12.0885 million.
Land Bank of the Philippines president and CEO Gilda Pico ranked second with P10.2929 million.
Four Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas officials are also in the Top 10 highest paid government officials, namely Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. at No. 4 with P9.9887 million, Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo at No. 8 with P7.5829 million, Deputy Governor Nestor Espenilla Jr. at No. 9 with P7.5027 million and Deputy Governor Vicente Aquino at No. 10 with P7.4145 million.
Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG) president and CEO Darlene Marie Berberabe received P9.385 million or just below the amount received by Tetangco.
Rounding out the list were Angeles City Water District General Manager Reynaldo Liwanag in fifth place with P8.831 million, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) chairman Cristino Naguiat Jr. in sixth with P8.1083 million, and PAGCOR president and COO Jorge V. Sarmiento in seventh with P7.8868 million.
Among President Benigno Aquino III’s Cabinet men, Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala was the highest compensated official with P4.2177 million last year.
He was followed by Labor Secretary Rosalinda D. Baldoz with P2.294 million, Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona with P2.164 million, and Commission Higher Education chairperson Patricia B. Licuanan with P2.102 million.
Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho L. Petilla ranked sixth with P2.062 million, followed by Budget Secretary Florencio B. Abad with P2.018 million.
Cabinet officials who took the eighth, ninth and tenth spots are Science and Technology Secretary Mario G. Montejo with P1.99 million, Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio A. Abaya with P1.921 million and Defense Secretary Voltaire T. Gazmin with P1.916 million. – Danessa O. Rivera/VS, GMA News
