MANILA, Philippines — The most number of complaints over violence against women in the first half of the year were filed in Western Visayas, statistics from the Philippine National Police showed.

Figures released by the PNP Directorate for Investigative and Detective Management showed that, of the 15,722 complaints for violations of Republic Act 9262, or the “Anti-Violence Against Women and their children (VAWC) Act of 2004,” in the first semester, Western Visayas, which includes the Panay provinces and Negros Occidental, accounted for 3,747.

Slightly behind was Region 11, or the Davao region, with 3,614 complaints, followed by Northern Mindanao, with 2,064.
The least number of complaints were filed in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, which recorded only 50 cases.

Region 12 recorded 1,307 complaints, the Caraga region 939, Metro Manila 794, Southern Tagalog 768, the Bicol region 541, Central Visayas 472, Central Luzon 363, Eastern Visayas 233, Cagayan Valley 156, and Western Mindanao 109.

The number of complaints in the first half of this year was less than the 16, 517 in 2013 but much more than 2012’s 11,531. –Thom Andrade, InterAksyon.com
