Olongapo holds peaceful rally marking Labor Day; Subic hosts sports festival

OLONGAPO City: Some 500 members of cause-oriented groups including workers of the Hanjin Shipyard in Subic Bay Freeport Zone held a peaceful rally to celebrate Labor Day.

Members of the League of Urban Poor (LUPA), Nuclear Free Movement, Makabayan, Kaisa Ka Womens Group, Ship and Construction Workers Association, HHIC Incorporated Workers Union, National Union of Builders and Construction Workers, Buklod ng Kababaihan and Tatag Inc. walked from Marikit Park to Volunteers Park near the main gate.

The protesters demanded the scrapping of the Visiting Forces Agreement, the planned revival of the nuclear power plant in Bataan, workers safety at Hanjin Shipyard and globalization.

Olongapo City Police Director Senior Supt. Oscar Albayalde who was at hand during the protest said that no untoward incident happened during the two-hour activity that started at 10:30 a.m.

Meanwhile inside the Subic freeport, hundreds of workers from different companies held a sports festival organized by the labor department of the Subic bay Metropolitan Authority.
