The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) today called on the House of Representatives to first act on pending bills seeking to provide tax exemptions to workers before embarking on proposals to change the Constitution.
TUCP fears that discussions on the tax measure will be sidetracked once the House starts deliberations on the pro! posals to amend the Constitution to give way to political and economic reforms.
“TUCP appreciates the many valid reasons behind the rush to amend the Constitution, however, there are also equally urgent measures such as rescuing workers from high prices and increasing costs of living that need to be addressed first”, TUCP said.
TUCP stressed that workers will appreciate charter changes better if it is preceded by laws that address poverty issues. “Congress must show sincerity by passing on measures that will address the ailing pockets of workers”, TUCP added.
TUCP earlier proposed that Congress provide tax relief to working families by granting minimum wage earners and other low-salaried employees from paying income taxes.
TUCP’s proposals also include increasing allowable deductions for married individuals and heads of families.
