Drop in human rights violations by cops recorded

THE Commission on Human Rights (CHR)-Davao had recorded a decrease in human rights violation cases conducted by police officials for the first quarter of this year.

Speaking on Monday’s Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Annex, CHR-Davao chief investigator Emiliano Cajes said that for this year, they have only recorded one case each against officials from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Last year, Cajes said they recorded seven cases for AFP and eight cases for PNP.

He said this decrease can be attributed mainly to their “information dissemination and to the awareness” of the public. He added that AFP and PNP’s human rights desks had also contributed to it.

For 2014, Cajes said they recorded a total of 84 human rights violation cases.
He said that CHR is currently conducting their own investigations on the killings that happened in Compostela Valley, Davao City and Digos City. (KGL)
