Philippine math wizards win 8 medals from Hong Kong competition

MANILA, Philippines – Young math wizards from the Philippines bagged two silver and six bronze medals at the 18th Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest held in Hong Kong last week.

Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG), yesterday said the medal haul was a decent performance for the country’s delegation.

The country’s silver medal winners were Albriz Moore Bagsic of Lilyrose School and Naomi Anne King of St. Jude Catholic School.

The bronze medalists were Maria Monica Manlises of St. Stephen’s High School, Annika Angela Mei Tamayo of Ateneo de Iloilo-Sta. Maria Catholic School, Dominic Lawrence Bermudez of Notre Dame of Greater Manila, Sted Micah Cheng of Hope Christian High School, Gregory Charles Tiong of St. Jude Catholic School and Aiman Andrei Kue of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.

A total of 160 elementary students from 15 countries and territories joined the contest held from July 13 to 17. The delegates were from the United States, Australia, Bulgaria, South Africa, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, India, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Mongolia, Macau, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Aside from Chua, the team leaders who accompanied the delegation were Luz Almeda, regional director of the Department of Education-National Capital Region; Eduardo de la Cruz, Arellano University assistant vice president for basic education and Rechilda Villame, MTG executive vice president. –Rainier Allan Ronda (The Philippine Star)
