4 miners die of gas poisoning

CAMP DANGWA, Benguet – Four pocket miners died in two separate incidents of gas poisoning inside mine tunnels in Itogon town Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Senior Inspector Joyce Dayag, Benguet Police Provincial Office information officer, said the victims in first gas poisoning incident were identified as Ismael Sadya-as, 25;
Bambi Dongla, 28; and Tula Mateo, 53, married.

It happened at Baguio Gold, Tuding, Itogon, Benguet. Initial Investigation showed that Sadya-as learned that Dongla went inside the tunnel on Sunday afternoon but never returned.

Sadya-as then decided to follow Dongla in the tunnel at about 2 p.m., but he too did not return. Mateo entered the tunnel at 5 p.m. to rescue his two fellow miners, but he also died after inhaling gas.

The bodies of the victims were retrieved at about 9:30 p.m. on the same day. Dayag said the other incident of gas poisoning transpired at Sitio Reno, Tuding, Itogon, Benguet between 11 p.m.

Sunday and 12:30 a.m. Monday. The victim, Abe Danao Amyao, 23, of Bakong, Sabkil, Loacan, Itogon, went inside their tunnel at around 11 p.m., where he was found dead by his brother Larry Danao Amyao and co-workers. (Zaldy Comanda)
