Two people died while six others were hospitalized due to gas poisoning in a mining tunnel in Mankayan town of Benguet, a police official said yesterday.

Supt. Davy Vicente Limmong, spokesman of the Cordillera regional police, said the gas leak was triggered by an explosion of the water pump inside a small mining tunnel in Tumtumba, Macannawey in Barangay Cabiten on Monday.

“The water pump exploded that caused huge gas and vapor emission. This resulted to oxygen deprivation to the miners inside,” said Limmong in a phone interview.

“Our investigators consider this case as gas poisoning,” he added.

He said pocket miners Dante Lingyasan, 36, and Elton Labintas, 19, were already dead when found retrieved them.
The other victims who were hospitalized were Nobres Libag, Elvis Lambino, Jessie Lambino, Dominic Olio, Junes Bombe and Carl Lingysaen. (Aaron B. Recuenco, Zaldy Comanda)
