Western Visayas ‘kasambahay’ gets P500 pay hike

Bacolod City, Negros Occ. – Domestic workers or “kasambahay,” in Western Visayas, including Negros Occidental, will receive a P500-salary increase starting February, based on the latest wage order approved by the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) in Region 6.

RTWPB-6 labor sector representative Wennie Sancho said the wage order is expected to take effect starting February this year.

Domestic workers in first class cities and municipalities in Negros Occidental are currently paid P2,000 monthly. In other local government units, househelps receive P1,000 monthly.

Sancho, also secretary-general of the General Alliance of Workers Assembly (GAWA), said the P500 increase makes the monthly rates of “kasambahay” in Western Visayas similar with those at the National Capital Region (NCR) and in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Enacted in 2013, Republic Act 10361 or the Domestic Workers Act (Batas Kasambahay), covers all workers performing household chores, excluding family drivers.
