Quezon City, FIDA sign free legal assistance accord

MANILA, Philippines – The Quezon City government and the Federacion International De Abogadas (FIDA) recently signed an agreement to provide legal assistance to the city’s urban poor, especially those who are victims of gender-related violence.

Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr., FIDA president Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez, and Joy Belmonte-Alimurung of the Quezon City Ladies Foundation signed the memorandum of agreement to set up a women and children’s legal assistance center to provide help to women and children in distress.

Quezon City was among the first local government units in Metro Manila to enact a Gender and Development Code, which Belmonte signed into law in 2004.

The city government has undertaken various initiatives to strengthen gender and development gains, which include information campaigns on the anti-trafficking law, gender sensitivity training, and linkages with several institutions for special projects such as gender-based film festivals and the publication of a gender-based newspaper.– Perseus Echeminada, Philippine Star
