LEGAZPI CITY–Three gold miners died on Friday after they were trapped in a mining pit in Aroroy town in Masbate province, a report reaching the Philippine National Police (PNP) Bicol regional police office here said on Saturday.

Senior Insp. Maria Luisa Calubaquib, Bicol police spokesperson, said two victims–Wilson Petiros, 40, Jorly Cedillo, 28–were digging a mining pit in sitio (sub-village) Boston in Barangay (village) Capsay on Friday when they fell unconscious, possibly due to gas inhalation.

Their companion, Francisco Bangalisan, 23, tried to rescue them at 2:30 p.m. but he, too, fell unconscious as he entered the pit owned by Rosebelle Rabosa.

Rescue teams from the police, the Bureau Fire Protection and the mining firm, Filminera Resource Corp. (FRC), tried but failed to revive Petiros and Cedillo.

Bangalisan, on the other hand, died while being taken to a hospital in the town. CDG
