Members of a rescue team have recovered the bodies of three miners who went missing in a flashflood that hit a tunnel in Monkayo, Compostela Valley late last month.

The Davao Region Risk Reduction and Management Council said the bodies of Roel Dacaldacal, Bryan Monsoon and Richard Monsoon were recovered on Thursday morning.

The three were among a several small-scale miners who were trapped in the Distino Australia tunnel on Mt. Diwata on Feb. 26.

Continuous heavy rains hit the gold-rich Monkayo town late last month, causing flashfloods in mining areas.

The recovery of the victims’ bodies came after weeks of digging by local search and rescue teams at the flooded tunnel.

The flashflood also resulted in the death of miners Gilbert Bayot, Reymart Pigaret and Reynante Gemino, and Ernesto Loquina, a member of the rescue team.

The tunnel had been ordered closed by the Mines and Geo-Science Bureau due to safety reasons, but a local mine cooperative reopened it.
