MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) plans to set up satellite registration centers to encourage more people to participate in the elections.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said these registration centers would be set up at barangay halls, public or private schools, commercial establishments and other public places as well as detention facilities.

Jimenez said Comelec personnel at these centers would receive applications for registration, transfer, reactivation, correction or change, reinstatement and inclusion on the list of voters.

The continuing voters’ registration will start on Oct. 3 and run until April 29, 2017.

Jimenez said the offices of election officers would be open from Mondays to Saturdays, including holidays, except on Nov 1, Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Dec. 31, Jan. 1 April 13 and April 14.

The poll body expects at least five million people to register so they can participate in the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections next year.

Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista said the poll body would release a new calendar of activities for the synchronized elections after the law suspending them for one year is signed.
